Mobile banking, UPI, online shopping, social media, and digital payments have made every task quick and simple. But with technology, online fraud cases have also increased a lot.

But this is fact that One wrong click or fake call can empty your bank account in seconds. So, everyone must know about online fraud – how it happens and what to do if you fall victim.

 

What is Online Fraud?

Online fraud is a cheat where fraudsters steal money, personal details, or data using internet, mobile, email, social media, or digital platforms – without any physical contact. The goal is to take money from bank accounts and misuse personal info.

 

The Ways of Online Fraud Happens:

1. Phishing

This is the oldest and most common way. Fraudsters send suspicious links via SMS or WhatsApp that look like from a bank, OTP request, KYC update, or big offer. If any person click on the link, then him details are stolen.

2. OTP Fraud

Fraudster calls pretending to be from bank, and says that your account will be blocked, and asks for OTP for "verification." Share it, If anyone share OTP then money will be gone from bank account!

3. UPI Fraud

Fraudster call the person and acts like a family friend, sends UPI request to "send money." If you Approve it, and money is debited from your account. During this process fraudsters stay on the call.

4. Fake Customer Care Scam

Fraudsters make fake websites on Google with wrong customer care numbers. If anyone call on fake numbers then they trick you into sending money. Sites look exactly like real ones.

5. Social Media Scam

Fake profiles on Instagram or Facebook to make friends, They build trust by chatting casually, acting like close friends over weeks. Suddenly, they pitch "sure-win" investment schemes or beg for money for emergencies.

6. Lottery / Prize Scam

Fraudsters call the peoples as bank or company staff, say that you won 10-20 lakh prize on lucky draw. Ask for tax or processing fee first. Send money, they vanish!

7. Job Fraud

Fraudsters makes fake job offers, and contact the peoples on call or mail. And they ask money for registration fee, after receiving money they will be disappear.

8. Loan Fraud

Fraudsters promises about quick loans at low interest without papers, but take processing fee first. Get the money they will be blocked the number and target another person.

9. Investment / Crypto Fraud

Fake apps or sites promise high returns. You invest, they shut down.

10. Digital Arrest

Video call to scare you about a crime, say you're under "online arrest." Pressure you to pay to get "cleared."

 

What to Do If Online Fraud Happens?

Don't panic – right steps can help recover money. Do this immediately:  

1. Call your bank's customer care and block the account. First 1-2 hours are "Golden Hours."  

2. Call National Cyber Fraud Helpline 1930 with full details.  

3. File complaint on https://cybercrime.gov.in with transaction info.  

4. Go to nearest police station, file FIR with proofs (SMS, screenshots, etc.).  

5. Visit bank, give all details, help with investigation.  

6. For UPI fraud, complain directly on app like Google Pay, PhonePe.

How to Prevent Online Fraud:

1. Never share OTP – banks don't ask.  

2. Don't click unknown links.  

3. Use strong passwords and 2-Factor Authentication.  

4. Watch out for fake customer care on Google.  

5. Use only official apps.  

6. Avoid too-good-to-be-true offers.  

7. Verify identity before sending money.  

8. Don't share personal info with social media "friends."  

9. "Digital Arrest" is fake – stay calm.

10. Beware of fake profiles on Instagram or Facebook pretending to be friendly strangers.
